A dedicated veterinary team will be swapping the clinic for the kitchen to put on a special bake sale for charity.

Team members at Linnaeus-owned Brentknoll Veterinary Centre in Worcester are planning a bake sale and raffle to raise money for the charity Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY)..

It comes after 14-year-old Matthew Notley, nephew of practice manager Helen Peake, died suddenly at the end of last year from a cardiac arrest.

Now, the practice is working with Chase School in Malvern, where Matthew studied, in an attempt to raise £17,000 to screen students in Year 11 for potential heart problems.

While this target has already been met, the school hopes to hold screening annually, so money raised will go to next year’s Year 11 group.

Helen said: “Matthew was such a fun-loving young man, who enjoyed getting out in nature and exploring. He always was so positive and always made us laugh with his quick wit and infectious laugh.

“He loved photography, surfing, mountain biking, cooking, climbing, hiking and running on the Malvern Hills, and loved his family.

“We want to raise this money in his memory, so every eligible child at Chase School can be screened for cardiac abnormalities.”

The funding will enable charity CRY to screen every child at the school for undiagnosed heart conditions, which it says results in the deaths of at least 12 young people each week.

The charity provides support, information and screening to try and prevent deaths.
