Each year our hydro pool is taken over by dogs practicing their doggy paddle. A group of the Brentknoll regular swimmers take to the water in an effort to combat the Summer heatwave... let's take a look at the dogs that enjoyed the pool this time!
Swimming (hydrotherapy) is a great way to burn off some extra energy as well as keep your dog fit and healthy; When it's too hot to walk your dog in the summer months, a dip in our clean and safe pool is a great alternative.
As Worcester's only vet practice with a large outdoor pool for dogs, we're glad we can offer some relief for the dogs of Worcester.
Why is swimming so great for dogs?
Hydrotherapy has long been used as a way of recovering from injury or as part of post-operative recovery for both humans and animals. It's main benefits are;
- Increased resistance from the water - this means the muscles work harder than on land, burning more calories in the process.
- Reduced stress on joints - the weightless effect of being in the water, means dogs with mobility related health problems can exercise safely without the risk of injuring themselves or putting extra pressure on joints.
- No risk of overheating - when the weather is warm, swimming is an ideal way of exercising without the risk of heat stroke.
For some of the dogs it's was their first time in the water and they were a little unsure, however after a few splashes they soon found their feet and they all enjoyed it. For some natural water babies the bigger the splash the better, and they were happy to throw themselves into the pool (which made for some pretty impressive photographs.) We were really impressed to see many different breeds of dogs attend, including Labradors, Flat coat retrievers, West highland terriers, Jack Russells and Boxers attend the party (you'll notice lots of black labradors in the photos - we think they must be part fish since they love the water so much.)
